ABSTRACT

Andriana, Errania. An Analysis of the Narrative Structure in Male Ex-Drugs Addict By Using Labov’s Narrative Structure. A thesis submitted as a partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Sarjana Degree of English Department, Faculty of Humanities, Airlangga University, 2011.

This paper deals with narrative structure of a former drug-addict, it uses Labov’s theory about narrative structure that has six elements. There are Abstract, Orientation, Complicating Action, Evaluation, Resolution and Coda. As we know that there is an increasing number of drugs addict every year. This phenomenon is very annoying our daily life. Furthermore in this research, the researcher concerns with life story of male ex-drug addict, how he becomes drug addict before. Life story is regarded as a basic narrative of human being. This research aims to reveal how the stories of male ex-drug addict are structured by using Labovs’ theory. In the process of data collection, the researcher used a semi-structured interview toward the participant in obtaining the data. After getting and choosing the data, the researcher is doing the interview. Then, the story is recorded, and it is transcribed, and the last is coding it according to its informational function by Labovs’ Narrative Structure theory. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that all elements are present in a male ex-drug addict’s story. The limitation of this analysis is the writer wants to make some analysis of narrative structure in male ex-drug addict’s life story only. The writer hopes the result can be arranged in narrative structure by using Labov’s theory, and how the participant sees his position in a drug abuse phenomenon in Indonesia.
