ANALYSIS

Many ways for adaptation novel to film, based on Robert Stam we will found three categories of adaptation, “they are close adaptation, loose adaptation, and intermediate adaptation.”
First close adaptation, the adaptation novel very close with the originality of novel. Second is loose adaptation, in loose the director has freedom for interpret novel and adapting to film. And the last is intermediate adaptation. Where the adaptation combining close and loose adaptation, because in intermediate adaptation the director interpreting the text very free but he can take one or two scene that important in story of the novel. Based on three categories of adaptation “O” movie is example of intermediate adaptation because in “O” we will found many similarities with Othelo. For example in characterization Odin that like Othello. He is black people. He is famous people too. He is nearly perfect as a man. And he more and more perfect when he dating with Desi Brable. She is a beautiful girl in Palmetto Grove Academy. In Othello, Othello is black famous people too that love with beautiful girl Desdemona. Between that we will found Hugo Goulding. The character of Hugo Goulding is like iago in Othello. He jealous with odin. Like iago jealous with Othello.
There are many things that Hugo does that show his jealousy towards Odin. He shows shock and dismay when the coach of the team (who is also Hugo's father) said that he loves Odin like his own son. Hugo also takes steroids and other drugs to keep his performance up hoping to surpass Odin's skills. He tells Rodger, (who plays the part of Rodrigo) “I'm considered a utility man. I rebound, I can shoot, I play guard, forward, power forward, you name the position, I fuckin' play it.” “The point is, I'm the MVP on this piece of shit team” This shows jealousy of Odin because he was selected as MVP of the basketball team. Hugo actually admits that he is jealous, but he sees it as a flaw as opposed to Iago in the play. Hugo talks to Odin before a dunking contest in the gym and says that Odin should forget about Desi. He tells him that he has everything and that he would give his life to be in Odin's shoes and says that Desi is not a prize that he needs to win, but rather that Odin is the prize. There is one place at the very end of the movie that Hugo directly admits to his jealousy. He is talking about a hawk and how it relates to power, darkness, determination, and to being proud. He says, “Odin is a hawk, he soars above us. He can fly. But one of these days everyone's gonna pay attention to me. Because I'm gonna fly too”. Not only characterization, we can found many similarities scene like Othello scene in “O”. At the last scene of “O” when Odin be trapped with Hugo and become angry and jealous with Desi, Odin kill Desi with a choke her like Othello kill Desdemona.

Conclusion
From the above explanation it shows that “O” is adaptation of Othello by William Shakespeare. The director of “O” adapting the novel use intermediate adaptation. Because if you look from setting of time of the movie, you will see the differences between Othello and “O” but if you see the characterization of character, story and several scenes you will found many similarities between Othello and “O”.
